The city of idol makers: North Kolkata

In the narrow lanes of Kumartui in North Kolkata - the City of Joy in West Bengal, India, barely wide enough for a hand-pulled rickshaw to pass though, the only people you will usually meet are the Kumars – the idol-makers of the city. It is from here that idols of Goddess Durga and other deities make their way into Kolkata every year.

The first potters in Kumartuli migrated from Krishnanagar some 300 years ago. They stayed in the then newly-forming Kumartuli for a few months, close to Bag bazaar ghat, so that clay from the river could be procured easily.

Durga Puja is the biggest festival in West Bengal. It starts with Mahalaya, usually during late September - early October.

Bengali Puja and for the others pujas according to bengali culture re, he whole cit depends on this place and before puja, every year, groups of young boys and girls visits there clicking pictures, gaining knowledge about the lifestyle of the potters and their incomparable creativity with clay.

So, it should be on your *Must Visit* list if you target to visit the City of Lights - Kolkata ever.
