The so
called “Battisi” is just
for chewing food, for easy mastication, & nothing more. Every next person
who has no idea about the role teeth play in our body has the above perception,
isn’t it true?
Well, being a
budding dentist, this article is an extract of what I’ve learnt till now about
teeth & their association with normal bodily functions.
I will put some scientifically proved statement about, how these white pearls in our mouth play a role physically, psychologically as well as esthetically. I’m not sure but the numbers of non-medicos I’ve asked till now have always affirmed that presence of teeth in our body is for mastication, proper speech & of course for esthetics. Let’s study some more important things rather than all the above. A healthy mouth can be a great asset, teeth in your oral cavity gives a defined shape to your face. To comprehend it clearly, can you imagine your face when there is no teeth inside?
You will look
like a poor ugly fellow with scrawny cheeks. (This is not related to the
elderly people, their teeth naturally shed off).
Apart from all
this, a smile has numerous day to day benefits. It gives us a greater confidence;
zeal & it also influence our social lives, career as well as relationship.
You must have heard an extremely valuable quotation, “Smile is the only curve in our body that sets everything straight”.
A healthy smile
can truly transform our visual appearance, the positivity of our mind-sets as
well as improving health not only of mouth but our body too.
For those who thinks tooth disease has nothing to do with rest of our body systems, suppose a person is suffering from gums disease, the bacteria from his/her mouth can get into the bloodstream & release some exotoxins (basically proteins) that causes blood thickening.
This simply means that there will be clot
formation; the heart is not getting enough nutrients, blood & oxygen, these
things altogether results into a greater risk of heart attack. Researches have
also shown that people suffering from gum disease are more likely to get diabetes.
And also if the proteins released by bacteria blocks blood supply of brain, it
will lead to potential brain stroke. Healthy tooth & gums reduces the risk
of cancer & dementia too & helps getting rid of halitosis (bad
breath).
Some of the ways to keep our teeth clean
& healthy –
*Brush your teeth
twice a day using fluoride toothpaste.
*Take a healthy
diet & limit the intake of junk food & soft drinks.
*Floss daily.
*Avoid
consumption of tobacco.
*Replace your
toothbrush after every 3-4 months.
*Schedule regular
dental checkups.
Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health.
