World
Anti-Microbial Awareness Week
World Anti-microbial
Awareness Week (WAAM) aims to increase awareness of global anti-microbial
resistance (AMR) and to encourage best practice among general public, health
workers and policy makers to avoid further emergence and spread of drug
resistance infections.
AMR occurs when bacteria,
viruses, fungi and parasites resist the effect of medications, making common
infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe
illness and death.
Anti-biotic resistance
is more common of all which occurs when bacteria change in response to
medications use to treat bacterial infections. It leads to higher medical costs,
prolong hospital stays, and increase mortality.
Main causes of
Anti-biotic resistance are over prescribing of antibiotics, patients not
finishing their treatment, over use of antibiotics, poor infection control in
hospitals and clinics and lack of hygiene & poor sanitation.
Every year from 18-24
November a “World Anti-biotic Awareness Week” is celebrated around the globe to
raise the awareness for rationale drug use and prevent emergence of resistance.
Everyone must play
their role in this regard by only using medications when prescribed by
professional healthcare or doctor, always follow your health worker's advice when
using antibiotics, never share or use leftover medication and maintain proper
hygiene.
